Friday bulletins

• Today from 8:30am EST (local times around the planet) the new album High Violet from The National will be streaming over at New York Times "in its intended level of quality". I can't tell you all how strongly I suggest you all give this a listen, or twenty-six! Richard Reed Parry has contributed heavily to the record. The album will come out on May 11th on 4AD.
• Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry and The National's Aaron Dessner working on the debut album from Little Scream. Read more about it in this article.
• Rumour has it that Arcade Fire will play two nights at Webster Hall, New York in June.
• Arcade Fire are currently looking for outdoor places to play with capacity for approx. 2-3,000 people.
• Check out some great photos from last night's The Luyas show. Arcade Fire's violinist Sarah Neufeld is playing with them on tour right now. Looks like a very special and wonderful gig.

Richard sings(!) on the new The National album

You heard me people. Richard Reed Parry from Arcade Fire contributed heavily to the new The National album High Violet, out May 11 on 4AD. The Quietus got to chat with The National's Aaron Dessner and this is what he had to say about it.

"Richie Reed Parry from Arcade Fire is all over the record, I think he’s on six or seven songs. He played guitar and stand-up bass on ‘Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks’, and the big thing he did was that he heard me working on the music for ‘Conversation 16’, and he said, “I have an idea!” So he went in and sang – his father is a choir director so he knows multi-part singing – he sang this seven-part vocal, it’s all him layered. That’s beautiful. He’s this very lovely, unassuming person – when you see someone’s musicality inserted into the room, you’re like, “woah!” And that was great – he was just staying at my house, it wasn’t like we planned to work on it like that.

The Quietus: The National Reveal High Violet Collaborators

I mean, I was super excited about High Violet before. But now... Wow! The National are easily the band I like the most after that Montreal band and the new single Bloodbuzz Ohio is nothing short of sensational.

Brief updates

• Mercury Records have confirmed Arcade Fire will release their third album next year.
• If you missed Nico Muhly and Richard Reed Parry with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony I've got something for you - all you other clever people who did listen to it also of course. First up a recording of the whole thingy that was broadcasted. If you're only interested in Richard's involvement in the concert you're probably best off downloading this. It only features the interview with Richard and his orchestral piece "For Orchestra and Heart and Breath" which you can read more about here. Oh and both of these are mp3 recordings.
  

The Quietus interviews Richard

This article really angers me. Really cheap move from The Quietus to ask for an interview with Richard about Bell Orchestre and then headline the piece with "Arcade Fire Recording New Songs". And not only that, they ask nearly as much about Arcade Fire as the band they should be asking about.

CBC Radio 2 to the rescue

As previously reported here and here Nico Muhly and Richard Reed Parry together with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony are today (Oct 29th) performing in Koerner Hall at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto. For all us who can't be there CBC Radio 2 comes to the rescue. On November 25th The Signal will broadcast the concert. Fantastic news.

For Heart, Breath and Orchestra

For Heart, Breath and Orchestra is the third in a series of compositions which use automatic/involuntary muscles in the human body (specifically the lungs and the heart) as the performance parameters. All of the notes are read from a score, but the tempos at which they are played are governed by either the heart rate or breathing rate of the individual players, or the conductor. During the performance, many of the performers wear stethoscopes which enable them to play in synch with their own heartbeats.

But you guys who follow this blog already knew about this event since I made a post about it almost a month ago. I'd have loved to been able to go see this!

Interview with Bell Orchestre

Bell Orchestre this last weekend kicked off their shortish European tour by playing at the Electric Picnic festival in Ireland. RTÉ 2fm was on site to catch up with Sarah, Mike and Richard from the band. There's a little Arcade Fire update towards the end as well.

Haha! A really really thorough answer there Sarah. Brilliant. As to the Arcade Fire bit there it pretty much confirms what I wrote on here the other day. Don't expect anything to be released this year.

Varit lite, läs mycket, upptagen på sistone så jag är mycket medveten allihop om att det har blivit väldigt få inlägg på sistone. Alltid kul att få mail från er allihop dock! :)

Så senast jag var i farten utlovade jag visst att skriva något mer utförligt om Bell Orchestre och deras helt makalösa uppföljare As Seen Through Windows så ska väl se till och hålla mitt löfte.

Att göra en helt instrumental platta kan lätt bli väldigt pretentiöst och åtminstone för mig svårt att verkligen ta till mig av det som artisten vill förmedla. Grupper som använder sång och texter förstår inte vilken lyx de har. Det är framförallt detta som jag redan med deras första skiva, Recording A Tape The Colour Of The Light, kände jag kunde komma över på ett sätt jag inte kunnat innan.



Bell Orchestre är svåra att klassificera och jag gillar inte heller att klassificera artister och grupper så jag överlåter det till folk som känner ett behov av att göra det. En sak är åtminstone säker och det är att deras musik är instrumental och bandet består för närvarande av sju personer;

Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire) – violin
Stefan Schneider (The Luyas) - trummor, slagverk
Pietro Amato (Torngat, The Luyas) - valthorn, elektroniska ljud
Kaveh Nabatian - trumpet, melodica
Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse) - knästålsgitarr
Colin Stetson* (The Sway Machinery) - klarinetter, valthorn, trumpet och bassaxofon
*Officiellt inte en av huvudmedlemmarna men är det mer eller mindre ändå.

Tillsammans får de till ljudlandskap som sträcker sig från östeuropeiska toner till de mest sköra toner som låter som de kommer från en isvak. Aldrig tråkigt och alltid intressant och ljuvligt att lyssna på.

Hur följer man då upp den kritikerrosade debutplattan? Lätt, man gör en ännu bättre skiva! Det är lönlöst att försöka att ingående försöka förklara hur de arbetar fram det enda makalösa ljudlandskapet efter det andra. Det måste upplevas. Men det jag kan säga är att när Sarahs violin i Icicles (första delen av Icicles/Bicycles) låter som om den vilket ögonblick som helst kan gå i tusen bitar likt en istapp som faller till marken efter att de första vårsolstrålarna gjort att den tappat greppet om hustaket är jag totalt försvarslös.

Köprekommendationen är given. Skivbolaget Arts&Crafts släpper skivan den 10:e mars och kan förbeställas här.

Sådär ser skivomslaget till den självbetitlade debutplattan från Team B ut. Och vilka är då Team B? Inga mindre än initiativtagaren Kelly Pratt (som spelade massa blåsinstrument bakom Arcade Fire när de turnérade. Beirut), Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem), Jon Natchez och Perrin Cloutier (båda i Beirut) och inte minst Richard Reed Perry (Arcade Fire). Richard kommer dock inte turnéra med dem då han bl.a. är upptagen med Bell Orchestre.

Richard intervjuas på The Hour

Japp, Richard ska bli intervjuad av George Stroumboulopoulos på CBCs The Hour. Intervjun var först tänkt att äga rum den 4:e september men har nu blivit framflyttad. Inte bestämt än när det nu ska bli av men det blir inom en snart framtid. Skulle man ha vägarna förbi Toronto och vill vara i publiken kan man skicka ett mail till thehouraudience@cbc.ca
