For Heart, Breath and OrchestraBut you guys who follow this blog already knew about this event since I made a post about it almost a month ago. I'd have loved to been able to go see this!
Thursday, October 29, at 8:00pm
Koerner Hall at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto
For Heart, Breath and Orchestra is the third in a series of compositions which use automatic/involuntary muscles in the human body (specifically the lungs and the heart) as the performance parameters. All of the notes are read from a score, but the tempos at which they are played are governed by either the heart rate or breathing rate of the individual players, or the conductor. During the performance, many of the performers wear stethoscopes which enable them to play in synch with their own heartbeats.

My brother Matthew

Last week I went home to my parent's place for his birthday.
We had a great party..
Instead of giving Matt presents, we (with his blessing and encouragement) donated some money to this place-
http://www.sunrise-therapeutic.ca/
Sunrise Therapeutic Riding and Learning Centre is located near Guelph, Ontario. It's a place where people who have disabilities get to ride horses among many other activities. It helps people experience independence that many of us take for granted. My brother and a number of his friends LOVE going there and benefit greatly from it. They're a nonprofit organization who rely solely on private donations. They're really struggling to come up with funding these days. If you have the means, I would highly recommend and ask that you donate even five or ten bucks to them. It's a really worthwhile cause and they really need the money right in order to avoid having to shut down.
I realize this isn't a local organization for everyone who may read this and I very much appreciate your time.
Sunrise's webpage has much more information.
Thanks a lot...

Klass Win, klass!
Wow,
I can't believe I am actually writing to defend my bands "real" personality. I wish I could not respond to something like this, but the reality is is that people will be asking questions about it for the next 5 years. I also fear that people will base their opinion of our band on the media quotes of a guy who doesn't even know us.
The only time we have ever shared the same stage with the Flaming Lips was our last show on the Funeral tour at a festival in Las Vegas (over 3 years ago)...we arrived the morning of the show from Brazil, slept all day and awoke into some kind of surreal Vegas jet-lag dream in which we were playing after the Flaming Lips...how strange...I was really excited to meet Wayne. Clouds Taste Metallic was a huge record for me, and growing up in the weirdness of Houston, I always imagined Oklahoma City to be in the same universe. I was really nervous to meet him and I felt a little weird that we were playing after them. We traded a little hello, but he was a hard guy to get a read on. Steven Drodz was super nice, and I felt good after talking to him...
So...I am not sure Wayne is the best judge (based on seeing us play at a couple of festivals) if we are righteous, kind and goodhearted people like The Edge and Justin Timberlake (who I am sure he knows intimately as well). I can't imagine a reason why we would have been pompous towards The Flaming Lips, a band we have always loved, on that particular night, all those years ago. Unless I was way more jet-lagged then I remember, I hope I was less of a "prick" then telling Rollingstone that a bunch of people I don't know at all are really assholes.
As a closing note, the main point that I am offended by in this whole thing is for Wayne to say we treat our audience like shit...
At times like these I am comforted by knowing that even though Wayne slammed Beck all those years ago, he seems like a really nice guy to me. I guess everyone has a different idea of what being pompous means.

if you're feeling sinister...
if you are mad at your internet service provider, your cell phone provider, the regulatory body that supposedly has your interests in mind, COMPLAIN! not to your friends, not to each other. demand more!

it's kind of like how you can't really whine about the current government if you didn't go out and vote to change it.
OUCH

president obama

Hello fellow citizens!
Some shots from Chicago...what a beautiful day. I will be sustained by that one for a while.
Off to Haiti for a week to visit the Partners in Health clinics. Please give anything you can at www.pih.org, as 4 hurricanes in one season is far too much for the country to take...
I hope you had a wonderful "finally a smart president day"!
lots of love,
Win

OCT 13 - nownownow
if you haven't yet, today's the day to do your research into who you will vote for tomorrow.
DO NOT VOTE CONSERVATIVE. please please please, do not vote conservative. you may think things are just kind of bad that it doesn't really make a difference, but you'll only really see how bad it is a year or two from now. (um, that's halfway into their next term)...
if you care about our destroyed health care system, if you care about teachers, if you care about culture... DO NOT VOTE CONSERVATIVE.
seriously.
xo j

ELECTION!!!ELECTION!!!
Earlier today Stephen Harper suggested that ordinary Canadians would understand the cuts his government made to the culture.
And suggested "ordinary Canadians" might not understand rich people (referring to artists) sitting around complaining about their lack of grants.
- Rosemary Barton, CBC News
ordinary like... you, stephen harper? the CBC reported in 2004 that the prime minister makes somewhere between $250,000 and $300,000 a year.
the house of commmons sits for what, 8 months of a year? not a bad salary for taking a third of the year off...
i'm extremely lucky to be in a very successful band (i dare you to try to argue we just sit around and eat grant money), and i would bet you made more money than i did last year, mister PM. i see a lot of my friends not in super successful rock bands depend on grant money for rent and food, to PAY for their work (working harder than you do?) at their art, with the hopes of gaining enough success to eke out a living at it.
i'd agree, maybe, that most people struggling to make their art are NOT like ordinary canadians, only because they make well BELOW the national average of income. and if you consider yourself to be an ordinary canadian, stephen harper, then the tie that binds must be hockey or coffee or something because you sure make a lot more money that most canadians i know.
in the end, and it's just a broad sweeping general sort of insult, not totally based in knowing anything about you (but that's sort of your style, no?)... but in the end i'd argue that you, stephen harper, are the rich man that sits around a third of the year on a salary we all chip in towards, listening to music and watching movies made by people who work a hell of a lot harder than you do.
i'm going to try my hardest to VOTE YOU OUT OF THERE.
Jeremy är irriterad! Lite bakgrund finns här.

hurricane - haiti
there's still a lot of haiti underwater right now. if you can do without a couple drinks this weekend or find a $20 bill behind the couch or something, every little bit of help would go a really long way. if you haven't donated to partners in health yet (or if you haven't read about what they do), now's a really good time.
www.pih.org
on the actual donation page you can pick where you want the money to go, and right now they need hurricane relief really badly.
thanks for reading.

ELECTION!ELECTION!!!ELECTION
hey stephen harper. nicely timed, with all this election chatter and all. most people, when they're not happy with their jobs, find a new one before they quit the old one. you wouldn't turf a pair of sneakers before you had a new pair, would you? not sneakers, no... but the arts! well...
so what are your new and improved plans for all those funding moneys? you know, for the people who've essentially lost their jobs (ie: you fired). you wouldn't close a manufacturing plant without some options for the workers in it, would you? wait... would you?
you fancy yourself a music fan, yet you have no respect for musicians. shame. you probably enjoy film, too. what hypocrisy!

finally, a new record.

NO SOUNDTRACKS GO
Hi everyone. Hope you are having a great spring... just to let you all know that (internet-based fact checking aside) Arcade Fire is NOT doing the soundtrack to any film. We are all off for the summer, writing songs, reading books, and keeping our plants alive. Regine, Owen Pallet and I may do an instrumental piece or two for Richard Kelly's new movie...we met at a show this year and hit it off, but we are not planning on doing any major work for a while, and this would not constitute a soundtrack or a release.
Can't wait for all you non-music stealers to hear the new Wolf Parade record, and that Jay Reatard record keeps getting better with every listen!
There was a special on Paul Farmer and Partners in Health on 60 Minutes a few weeks ago...
http://www.pih.org/inforesources/news/60_Minutes_May_2008.html
I strongly recommend checking it out.
Love,
Win
